STUDYING AND CHANTING THE QINGJING JING

“Recite 10,000 times and the mysteries within will reveal themselves 誦持萬遍，妙理自明.” – Jade Emperor’s Heart-Mind Seal Classic 【玉皇心印妙經】 The Qingjing Jing 【清靜經】 is the central meditation text of the Wudang Sanfeng Lineage 武當三豐派 and a treasure of the Daoist tradition. Most English translations of this text are highly academic or lack accessible commentary for contemporary practitioners to appreciate its profound teaching. In keeping with Daoism's centrality of textual commentary and direct experience through practice, we will break down and explore the entirety of the text as a means of contemplative practice in this seminar. We will also explore the recitation of the text as well as the role of chanting in the Daoist tradition and its relevance in daily life for modern practitioners. Participants in this seminar will be provided with a sandalwood muyu 木魚, or ‘woodfish’ – the ritual instrument used for keeping time in Daoist chanting – and learn about its symbolic role and context in chanting as a meditation practice. Engaging in an informed and unaffected practice of chanting, participants will lay the ground for a personal understanding of the centrality of both chanting and textual study in the Daoist tradition.
