Service Description

"In Japan… tea is served, and that's it really, except that everything is done with so much ritual and ceremony that a banal daily event is transformed into a moment of communion with the universe." – The Book of Tea, Kakuzo Okakura In this concluding practice-based seminar we will further explore the role and reach of meditation off the cushion through the preparation and appreciation of Chinese tea. While tea is a massive topic of great depth, breadth, and rich history, our main focus will be in approaching it as a form of both practice and appreciation. Provided with a tea set curated by me and tea from the Hidden Peak Teahouse, participants will be taught how to prepare gongfu tea 功夫茶 and explore the ritual symbolism and significance of preparing, pouring, and drinking tea as a form of meditation. We will be working exclusively with puer 普洱, an aged and fermented tea cultivated in the hills of Yunnan 雲南 province but I will also provide chrysanthemum flowers so that participants outside of US time zones who may be wary of tea before bed can still be engaged in class. After learning the methods of preparation, we will open up a question-and-answer session. Participants will be provided with the following items personally curated by me: • A selection of high-quality puer 普洱 tea from the Hidden Peak Teahouse • Chrysanthemum flower tisane • Handmade Yixing 異性 clay teapot • Tea cup • Tea towel • Draining board • Tea knife (for breaking up puer tea bricks) • Tea separating tray *Please be sure to have a kettle and preferably spring water on hand for this seminar.
